9 Week Novenarios for Andy Tuesday’s
Traditionally, a Novenario, is nine days of prayer after a death, attributed to the Catholic religion, these prayers assist the deceased in getting to Heaven, and it is the family’s way of getting some form of closure and peace over their loss.
This nine week official mourning for 13 year old Andy Lopez will begin in the Moorland Area of Santa Rosa where Andy was shot seven times and killed by Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy Eric Gelhous on October 22, 2014.
The Novenario is being organized by the group “Andy’s Youth”, part of the Justice Coalition for Andy Lopez which formed shortly after Andy’s death. “Although we are deviating from custom, in the sense that instead of 9 days we are making it 9 weeks, I feel that what we are doing will be an inclusive approach.” said organizer Ramon Cairo. “We needed to find a thread that would allow us to address the subject of Andy’s death and what the Latino Community of Santa Rosa needs to empower the community, while at the same time teaching viable ways to seek remediation and an address of grievances”.
By expanding the Novenario, we will help bring closer together all peoples, of all beliefs, and give us an opportunity to become better acquainted with one another.
Instead of attempting to change minds, we will inform people about what is going on in their community, and show them the measures we are taking to assist all our citizens in achieving equality, and in upholding our civil rights and liberties.
So, for the next 9 Andy Tuesday’s, we will be roving through different neighborhoods, all on the West Side, getting to know the communities there and helping to spread the message of the need for solidarity and grace within our diverse communities. Please join us.
